It was 1961, and if not exactly a palindrome, it was an unusual year that read the same way upside down. After a solid run of 10 Disney animated features beginning in 1937 with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and continuing through 1959's Sleeping Beauty, change was in the air. It was the dawning of the Age of Aquarius, the sixties were upon us, and prophetically, as if foreshadowing the British Invasion, we have One Hundred and One Dalmatians patriarch Pongo relating this chronicle: ------------- Pongo: My story begins in London, not so very long ago. And yet so much has happened since then, that it seems more like an eternity. ======================= The art style was different, and the characters and location were more modern and contemporary. The backgrounds were stylized line illustrations, charming in their own way, but drawings rather than paintings. Compare the opening sequence of Pinocchio to the similar scene of London in 101 Dalmatians. The Afghan owner, a woman artist in a beret, who almost looks like she could be a beatnik, might have drawn 101's urban backgrounds. Funny thing, though Pongo's owner Roger is a struggling songwriter, there are only two songs in the film, "Cruella De Vil" and the inconsequential "Dalmatian Plantation." Previous Disney efforts were more like Broadway or MGM musicals. Lady and the Tramp, for instance, had the venerable Miss Peggy Lee providing several spectacular songs throughout. Ukulele Ike provided "When You Wish Upon a Star" for 1940's Pinocchio, and "Someday My Prince Will Come" was even covered by Miles Davis and is a firmly established jazz waltz standard. Though 101 Dalmatians had some big shoes to fill--or chew on, after more than 20 years, you can't exactly blame Disney for trying something new. Taken on its own terms, it is a perfectly delightful film with plenty of the Disney patented heart warming moments, colorful characters, and memorable villains. I was wondering why Cruella spelled her name De Vil instead of like Coupe De Ville, but then I realized that if you lose the space, you get devil, and Cruella is certainly a devil of a villainess. Martha, Paris, Imelda, Leona... What do they know? --------------- Anita: Cruella, isn't that a new fur coat? Cruella De Vil: My only true love, darling. I live for furs. I worship furs! After all, is there a woman in all this wretched world who doesn't? ====================== Then there are Cruella's henchmen, Horace and Jasper, who aren't above cloaking their misdeeds with a counterfeit governmental stamp of approval: --------------------------------- Jasper: There's a new act just been passed in parliament. Comes under the heading of "Defense of the Realm Act", it's article 4, section 29, it's very important, you see, it's the law, and it's for your safety, ma'am. Nanny: Well, I don't care what Parliament realm, or whatever it is, says. You're not coming in here, not with the mister and missus gone. ======================================= Sometimes it almost seems like Disney will take the modern approach too far: ------------------ Pongo: Come on, kids! Roll in the soot! Penny: You mean you want us to get dirty? Pepper: Did you hear that, Freckles? Dad wants us to get dirty. Cadpig: Mother, should we? Perdita: [sighs] Do as your father says. Pepper: This'll be fun! Cadpig: I always wanted to get good and dirty! =============================== Can a 'wardrobe malfunction' be far behind? Fortunately, the soot washes right off, and the Dalmatians, or Disney, haven't changed their spots at all. One unintended consequence of this movie was that it made the Dalmatian breed look so cute that every time it is re-released kids inevitably talk their parents into getting one of the little rascals only to find that in real life Dalmatians are high energy/high maintenance dogs that most families are ill prepared to deal with. For the filmmakers, the challenge of 101 Dalmatians is only that it was difficult to give them all unique personalities. The runt of the litter, named Lucky, stands out, as do Patch, with his eye patch markings, and Rolly, with his insatiable appetite; but who can really tell Penny, Pepper, and Cadpig apart? Even the proud parents Pongo and Perdita have trouble. Bottom line is The Hundred and One Dalmatians is something a little different from previous Disney films, but is nonetheless a very entertaining film that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Even my three dogs, Dusty, Delilah, and Miles enjoyed it. Three paws up; and a bark, two yips, plus one very enthusiastic group howl. Based upon Dodie Smith's excellent novel The Hundred And One Dalmatians (see my review), this is the story of Pongo and Perdita, a married couple of Dalmatians in London, and their quest for their 15 kidnapped puppies. Though it misses quite a few of the subtleties of the book (which is why I only rate it at four stars), it's still a delightful animal film--one, indeed, of Disney's best--with a large cast of very individual creatures (and humans, such as "my old pet," songwriter Roger Radclyffe, his bride Anita, Nanny (who's "almost canine at times"), and, of course, the over-the-top Cruella deVille and her henchmen Jasper and Horace Baddun). More overtly humorous than Smith's work (doubtless as a bow to the less subtle American sense of what's funny), it's still full of laughs, action, and suspense, and is a film I rewatch regularly. Highly recommended.

Bought this to view for our "1st Annual Cousin Weekend". We had 5 of our grandkids at the same time and wanted to have a family movie that we could all enjoy, and we did!

The dvd was purchased for my granddaughter and she just loves it! the action, color, and animation is pure innocent entertainment value for little eyes and ears.101 Dalmatians (Two-Disc Platinum Edition)

Fashion designer Anita and computer-game writer Roger meet, fall in love and marry along with their dalmatians Perdita and Pongo. But the proud dogs' puppies are kidnapped by Anita's boss Cruella De Vil, who is stealing young dalmatians to make the coat she has set her heart on. Enlisting the help of the British animal kingdom, Pongo and Perdita set out to find and rescue all ninety-nine pups from their fearsome captors, Jasper and Horace. "101 Dalmatians" is perfectly good clean children entertainment. It's has a fun feeling and atmosphere and some great characters. Glenn Close is perfectly cast as über-villain Cruella De Vil and portrays a highly memorable character. She truly is the highlight of the movie and steals the show. If you liked the cartoon as a kid, you'll love this version as well. Sit down with your family and enjoy this movie.

Glenn Close is really a good sport in the role of Carella De Ville. She was awesome!

I received the DVD very quickly but it won't play a couple of chapters and it skips some. I emailed the company for help with either returning it or getting a replacement but unless my internet service blocked their reply, I didn't receive one. Wish I could get a replacement, though.

There are certain roles that actresses are born to play and Glenn Close was born to portray Cruella DeVille in "101 Dalmatians". Sure the puppies are adorable little creatures and Jeff Daniels and Joely Richardson are a cute-looking couple, but Glenn is magnificent as the evil Cruella who wants the puppies destroyed to make a coat. Based on the animated Disney feature of the same name from 1961, Glenn must have studied the cartoon characterization of Cruella closely because everything from her voice patterns to her movements and eye gestures are identical to the original, and that was animation! A great film for the entire family, both young and old, I never get tired of watching this classic live-action feature. What the message of the film shows is that if your an evil person only looking out for yourself there are definite consequences; the villin always gets it in the end. Hugh Laurie(from TV's "House" fame) has a small supporting role playing one of the puppy thieves working for Cruella. This film has grossed so far over $300,000,000 at the world-wide boxoffice. A sequel entitled "102 Dalmatians", also starring Close, was released, but wasn't as successful.

Great job on having a product that was hard-to-find. My daughters had had a copy in the past but one had decided to scratch her initials into the CD. We found it recently and she wanted to play it but couldn't. She asked if I could find one for her. That let me to you. Great job. Excellent price and handling. Keep up the good work.

Even for those who haven't seen either of the movies, both the young and old will delight in this fun software. It's able to help improve reading skills by reading over the words, and players are allowed to replace a certain word in it with a synomyn, as well as read definitions of the synomyns and the actual words in the storybook. The characters who narrate, especially Lucky, are quirky and fun to listen to, also. Plus, fun stuff is hidden in the game - for example, in the first "page", if you click on Pongo's food can, he'll fill up the bowl until it overflows! Songs are in the game too - for example, when Pongo and Perdy are howling to try and get the attention of the other dogs, you can hear a song, as well as in the last scene. Also, mini games are in the game too - try the game where you match dogs to their apartment on the first page, as well as the one based on the movie in the last scene. And, when words are read, funny animations are shown, and you can get a response or animation by clicking on almost anything. On the second page, try the part where you click on Cruella's picture. So, whether you've seen the movie or you haven't, this game is recommended for all who like games, songs, a good, unique story, as well as a fun computer game - try this right now!!! I bought this for my 3 year old and she loves it. She'd never seen the movie but loves dogs so it was a hit. She loves the conrol she has over the game. It will read to her on demand, select any page in any order she requests and it will even let her change some of the key words to various synonyms. The games are delightful, too and the difficulty levels can be set to meet the challenge as they grow. The software will also give them definitions of key words if they want it to. This may not teach them a great deal but they will have a good time with it.

I love it! The best part in this game is the coloring studio. The dalmatians look good if you put more spots on them or black. This needs a sequel, only it will let you draw spots on the puppies. :)

This did not install on my kids' computer, which is Win98, and only installed on my work computer (not great). Of course, I had already opened it, so returning it wasn't worth the possible hassle. At any rate, I thought the games were not imaginative and the navigation was poor, so it was tough for my kids to get around and figure out where the games even were. Plus, the skill level required for the different "sub-games" is pretty divergent.

My very bright 5 year old was bored after the first 30 minutes. The games are not much fun, and my son was very disappointed.

I had loads of fun while playing "Disney's Activity Center: 102 Dalmatians"-well, at least while playing "Verdogo", a fast-paced arcade game! You play as Oddball-that cute, little, spotless pup from the film-and help her make her way through Le Pelt's Bakery to save all 102 dalmatian pups! Along the way she'll need to climb up ladders, slide through tubes, ride on moving belts, jump on elevators, and, of course, dodge nasty Cruella and her gang of puppy nappers! Great graphics and hip music make this game even more entertaining!When your done with "Verdogo", you might want to "Adopt-a-Puppy"! Players get to choose one of four cute pups and give them a name (I named mine "Ace"), then take them to one of six international parks. To encourage replay value, you get the parks one at a time. You also get cool toys, like a frisbee that you can really throw for your pup to catch!Okay, I've told you what's good about this game. Now I'll tell you what's not.Well, for starters, there's "Operation: Dalmatian", a logic game where you ask Waddlesworth The Parrot (Aka, The Rottweiler), questions to help you find the "Top Dog". It's fun on 2 player mode, but on one player mode, it's really, really, BORING!!! Another flop is the "Pup Art Gallery", a poorly designed art activity with not nearly enough stickers and backgrounds! And once you feed all 102 hungry puppies in "Chow Time", it gets easy and repeatitive fast (though those little pups do look really cute as they eat their dog food).Oh well. At least "102 Dalmatians" has one really entertaining game, and four others that are fairly entertaining, as well. It will certainly satisfy young fans of the film, but may disappoint those who might expect a little more from Disney. 4 OUT OF 5!

Typical Disney software - it should take a developer an afternoon to put this together. Disney should be ashamed for charging money for such a weak, boring, uninspired product. There's better free games for my kids.Buy this and your kids will be bored with it in 30 minutes and you'll feel stupid for giving Disney your money.

This game is GREAT! My 4 1/2 year old son plays with this game at pre-school. It's more than just a fun game to navigate through. It teaches them coordination and problem solving. There is one aspect of this game that frightens him a little (the Dog Catcher). Otherwise, he amazes me with his control of the keyboard and how well he has learned to navigate around on the computer. My daughter who is 7, also loves the game. It truly is worth the money, but BEWARE WHEN ORDERING. There are different versions of this game based on the type of system you are using and for hand held toys. I almost ended up with a cartridge version when it was a CD Rom I was interested in.

Aside from the additctive mini games, you'll be dazzled by all the unique level settings like the Carnival, Picadilly, Toy Factory, Sewer and Old Mansion. Challenging controls and cute, colorful characters make more an awesome kid's game.

It's a good game, but I recommend the Playstation version of this. The computer one is bad. :) :(

This game is fun, fun, fun. I bought it for my six year old a few days ago, and we've put hours into it already. On the PC, it takes a moderate amount of coordination to bounce and jump, but we have cleared all 100 bones out two levels so far and have enjoyed every minute. I bought this game in a Disney Dalmation 3-pak, and wasn't expecting much. But this is the only game we've played out of the three, so the other two are just gravy. Highly recommended! Update-one year later: We finished this game after three of fun play. It is still her favorite game, and we keep wishing we could find another which is as much fun. No regrets-find this game somewhere and enjoy!

This is a wonderful game. I've got 3 kids aged 5,4 & 3. The cd contains the main game and some mini fun games.In the main game, the levels open up as you go along. Controlling the puppy is not east at first though can be mastered with some practice - My 5 year old plays this a lot. It's too hard for the other two.At the beginning only one minigame is available - The classic memory game !!!Both my 4 and 5 year olds love it. More mini games become available as you advance in the main game.My 3 year old is too young too play but she LOVES TOO WATCH.Overall, I truely recommend this game which I've had the pleasure to play a bit myself after putting the kids to sleep...You've got plenty of levels too complete so it should keep you busy for quite a while...Great 3d graphics !!!Thank you Disney interactive...

I LOVE THESE MOVIES, LOVED THEM AS A CHILD AND AS AN ADULT (I'M 60).

In recent decades a new technology was made. A technology to make animals talk. No, animals did not REALLY talk. Movie producers used computers to make their mouths move to make it SEEM like they were talking. Then, like cartoons, the actors would be the "voice" of the animal. What a fascinating technology! It was done in the movie "Babe". Babe the pig talked beautifully. It was done on "Incredible Journey". The technology made "Dr. Doolittle" with Eddie Murphy look so fine! Now we have the remake of 101 Dalmatians, a cartoon where the dogs were the stars of the movie. They all talked and all had wonderful unique characters all their own. .....So why the heck didn't Disney use the same technology in this movie as they used in all the others? Why did NOT want to make those dogs talk? Not only does this make the movie less interesting to watch but it mutilate the integrity of the movie as well. The dogs themselves were supposed to be the stars of the movie, not the humans. The animals THEMSELVES were supposed to rescue the puppies, not Scotland Yard. Talk about taking the ice cream out of the ice cream cone! Well, there IS one bright spot to the movie. Glenn Close DID do an excellent job as Cruella Di Vil. Although if the dogs only talked her character would have been even more funny she still stood out. She is the reason to see the movie. ... and it's nice to see Hugh Laurie again on the big screen.

All i can say is this is a great movie(s). My kids love it. We also have 3 copies! If you dont have it you should get it

I remember when you'd exit a Broadway play humming the music. Today we have divas and virtuosos and utterly boring music. I miss tunes like "Cruella De Vil"

It's sad that the soundtrack CD to Walt Disney's 1961 classic film 101 Dalmatians is no longer in print. It's even sadder that Disney has yet to take the opportunity to reissue the CD in conjunction with the movie's DVD reissue earlier this year. But frankly, I think it's a shame when ANY Disney soundtrack is taken out of print. But I digress. If you're expecting the most amazing sound quality of your life, this CD will sorely disappoint you. Some cuts sound fuller than others, but when you consider that when this CD was released, the elements this music was recorded on were nearly forty years old, I think any quibbles about sound quality can be forgiven. (I do have to wonder sometimes how music in Disney films can sound better than a remastered CD done at the same time. But anyhoo...) There's nothing here, fortunately, that ruins my listening experience. Unlike a lot of Disney films before or after 101 Dalmatians, there's very few songs on here. In fact, there's only three - the classic Cruella de Vil, the Kanine Krunchies jingle, which was a loving and witty parody of classic 1950's/1960's commercial jingles, and the finale, Dalmatian Plantation. But despite the lack of songs, the score alone is a fantastic listening experience. In the 1990's, Disney's amazing output of soundtrack CDs from their animated films may have only been rivaled by Rhino's output of soundtrack CDs from classic MGM musicals. Sadly, both Disney and Rhino are no longer as prolific, and some of their best releases have sadly been taken out of print. If you can find a good condition used CD for a reasonable price like I did, DON'T hesitate to pick it up.

I was not terribly impressed with this CD. Fortunately, I decided to get it from the library to see if it was good before deciding whether or not to buy it.Although the orchestration of the songs is well done, most of them simply were not meant to be performed by a chorus; and they sound terrible in that form. If you want some of the songs on this CD, I suggest you look at one of Disney's compilation CDs in the Classic Disney Vol. 1-5 series or the actual soundtracks of the movies.

Where to start?! Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra have had a track record for recording some of the most stupendous movie music ever. Magical Musicals is just another example of how audaciously bold, yet beautiful Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have taken the original scores, molded them into the same pieces, yet at the same time, creating life of their own in each and every note. If you are looking for ANY soundtrack containing Disney music, this should be the first CD you listen to. There are others out there, and yes, they may sound beautiful and enchanting, but you won't find such a unique and compelling score anywhere else other than this CD. Check it out!!
